LLOYD CENTER

The Lloyd District is a commercial neighborhood located in northeast Portland that has had a vision to become the second downtown in the city. There are major attractions that draw in large crowds to the neighborhood and are in close proximity to the waterfront. Unfortunately, I-5 and the industrial rail line are blocking access to the Willamette River. There are also no residential communities within the neighborhood, which makes it a ghost town once business hours are over. Large amounts of parking lots waste space and a mixture of low and high-rise buildings are out of scale.

To create more activity, mixed-use buildings are placed throughout. There is a sequence of public spaces that run from Holladay Park and the Lloyd center mall to the waterfront. These connections allow for more social interactions and encourage alternative modes of transportation. Narrowing street widths make for slower pedestrian friendly routes and create more activity that becomes more memorable. The biggest move made was to continue the street from the steel bridge to north of the Lloyd Center Mall to make it easily accessible.
